Ordering & Translation Decisions

The most striking decision in this volume is Ruth — placed first, not tucked between Judges and Samuel as in most modern Bibles. In the oldest traditions of the Ketuvim, Ruth leads the Writings. There is a beautiful theological logic to this: Ruth, a Moabite woman who chose to follow Naomi into Israel's covenant, becomes the great-grandmother of David. She is the hinge. The outsider who steps in. It felt right to honor that placement.

The rest of the Ketuvim follows the Baba Bathra sequence through Psalms, Job, and Proverbs, with Chronicles closing out the volume — as it does in the Hebrew Bible tradition, ending with Cyrus's decree to return to Jerusalem.
